Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum intent applies to all our young people, regardless of background, gender, sexual orientation or ability. As a school, and department, we are absolutely committed that the opportunities we plan for and implement, ensure that each student can reach and exceed their potential.

Our young people will develop a lifelong love of learning in sport through participating in a wide range of different sports. They will learn about the skills, techniques, tactics, rules and regulations needed to become a competent sports person and they will have the confidence to participate in these sports, recreationally and competitively, for the rest of their lives.

All students at Washington Academy are, without exception, entitled to a world class physical education curriculum that is holistic, ambitious and aspirational by covering different aspects of the subject including that of participant, official, coach and leader. Students will be given opportunities to lead peers and primary school children in a range of different roles and environments, as we work with local schools and community clubs. Our people centred approach encourages all students, whatever their skill or understanding, to gain representative honours as a performer, at a range of levels and in many different sports.

It is vital we prepare our young people so that they are empowered to become engaged positive and respectful members of society through a dedicated focus on developing them as professional learners and developing an understanding of the importance of looking after their physical and mental health, through regular physical education lessons and providing an opportunity for students to take part in a full extra-curricular programme of sports activity, including activities centred around individual performance, enjoyment and competition.

Literacy and numeracy skills are fed through our curriculum allowing pupils to focus on the precise technical language and skills needed to be successful in the sports they learn and compete in.

We are responsible for ensuring our young people are confident to pursue ambitious next steps in physical education, employment or training which will support their future careers through introducing the importance of a wide range of transferable skills that are used in physical education and to highlight how these can be used by young people in their future learning or career.
