Business Studies Curriculum Intent

Curriculum Vision
Our Business Studies curriculum is ambitious for all learners and is designed to develop commercially aware, analytically confident and economically informed young people. We ensure equitable access to powerful business knowledge so that every pupil can understand how businesses operate and make informed decisions as consumers, employees and future entrepreneurs.

At Washington Academy, pupils learn that business activity shapes local, national and global economies. Through the study of enterprise, finance, marketing, operations and human resources, pupils develop the knowledge and confidence to interpret real-world commercial situations critically and responsibly.

We explicitly teach both substantive knowledge (key concepts such as revenue, profit, cash flow, marketing mix, economies of scale, business ownership, globalisation and legislation) and disciplinary knowledge (how business professionals analyse data, weigh risk, evaluate options, interpret financial information and justify strategic decisions). Through structured commercial enquiry, pupils apply this knowledge with increasing precision and independence.

Curriculum Rationale and Sequencing

The curriculum is coherently sequenced across Years 10 and 11 through two connected themes: Investigating Small Business and Building a Business.

In Year 10 (Theme 1), pupils develop secure foundations in entrepreneurship, spotting opportunities, ownership structures, marketing fundamentals and external influences. This establishes core commercial understanding and introduces financial literacy.

In Year 11 (Theme 2), pupils build upon this foundation by exploring growth strategies, operational decision-making, financial analysis and human resource management at scale. This cumulative progression enables pupils to move from understanding how small businesses operate to analysing strategic decision-making in larger, more complex organisations.

Knowledge is revisited and applied across both themes, ensuring that key concepts such as profit, risk, market competition and resource management are retained securely and transferred confidently to unfamiliar case study contexts.

Analytical and Quantitative Skills

Pupils develop fluency in interpreting quantitative and qualitative business data, including financial statements, break-even charts, cash flow forecasts and market research findings.

They learn to calculate revenue, costs, profit and break-even points, and to analyse trends and patterns within data. This strengthens their ability to draw substantiated conclusions and make evidence-based recommendations.

Literacy and Commercial Communication

Subject-specific vocabulary is taught systematically and cumulatively, enabling pupils to use precise business terminology when analysing and evaluating case studies.

Extended written responses are explicitly modelled so that pupils can structure arguments clearly, justify decisions and evaluate business strategies with depth and coherence in line with GCSE expectations.

Ambition for All

We maintain high expectations for all learners, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND. Our curriculum is designed to remove barriers to achievement and ensure sustained progress over time.

Adaptive teaching, structured modelling of analytical responses and explicit vocabulary support enable all pupils to access complex commercial concepts and examination material confidently.

Assessment

Assessment is structured to ensure pupils build secure foundations and make sustained progress in both knowledge acquisition and analytical skill.

Assessment is cumulative and designed to strengthen long-term retention. Regular retrieval practice and application to unfamiliar case studies ensure that core concepts are embedded securely.

At Key Stage 4, assessment is aligned to GCSE examination criteria and is synoptic in nature. Pupils are required to demonstrate knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation through structured extended responses and data-driven decision-making tasks.

Preparation for Future Pathways

We prepare pupils for ambitious next steps in further education, employment and enterprise by making explicit the links between business knowledge and professional pathways.

Pupils explore careers in finance, marketing, management, entrepreneurship, economics, retail, human resources and the wider commercial sector.

Through Business Studies, pupils develop highly transferable skills including financial literacy, analytical thinking, strategic decision-making, communication, problem-solving and the ability to evaluate risk — skills valued across all sectors of the economy.
