Curriculum Impact

Curriculum impact is evaluated primarily through what pupils know, understand and can do over time, as evidenced in their work, structured discussion and application of learning, alongside assessment outcomes. Examination results are important, but they are not the sole indicator of curriculum quality. At Washington Academy, we measure these outcomes in many ways, including:

  • Discussing the work in student books with students, to ascertain how well they can explain key concepts
  • Verbal feedback from students about their learning and engagement in lessons
  • Formative assessment strategies, including SUN feedback, questioning and retrieval practices
  • Summative assessments, for example mock examinations and other assessments completed in advance of data captures
  • Outcomes from external examination series
  • Destinations of students moving on from Washington Academy; post-16 education, employment, and training
  • Accreditations from external professional associations
  • Evaluation of how well pupils (particularly disadvantaged pupils, those with SEND and pupils known to children’s social care) have acquired the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life; this includes triangulating evidence from pupils’ books, lesson observations, assessment outcomes and structured discussions with pupils.
  • Regular evaluation of the pupil premium strategy and its impact on disadvantaged pupils’ progress and access to the full curriculum; leaders use both quantitative and qualitative evidence to adjust approaches.
  • Assessment of reading fluency and foundational knowledge so any gaps are identified and 'kept up' with promptly to secure access to the wider curriculum.

Leaders also evaluate whether pupils experience the full breadth of the intended curriculum, including cultural, academic and enrichment opportunities.
