Subjects

Art

In the art department, students are taught a wide variety of techniques and processes throughout Key Stage 3 — and Key Stage 4 if they choose to take art as an option. 

Key Stage 3

What will I learn in Year 7, 8, and 9?

The national curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all students:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft, and design.
  • Within the course of study, students will learn a skill base of art techniques and build upon these with tailored structured processes.

How will I learn?

Students will be inspired and motivated by relevant artists and designers. Developing their creativity and ideas in a range of techniques to record observations, this will be produced mainly in sketchbook format.

Students will:

  • Learn to use a range of techniques and media.
  • Increase their skills base using a variety of different materials.
  • Analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others.

What abilities, aptitudes, skills, and interests will I need?

  • Skills required: Students should be able to use good technical skills in a range of materials.
  • They will be expected to develop personal ideas and an independent approach to their work.
  • Students will be required to do research and artwork out of class, set as homework.
  • Additionally, students will show good visual awareness relating to their studies and surroundings.

Key Stage 4

What will I learn in Years 10 and 11?

At the end of the course, you submit a portfolio of evidence, representing around 45 hours of work. This is usually made up of two coursework projects. The work demonstrates your ability to express yourself in a variety of art materials. A project includes preparatory studies and a final piece.

An understanding of the work of artists, architects, designers, and craft persons is developed through personal study. You must show you have met the assessment objectives in each project.

In essence, the course will show what students know, understand, and can do in art and design.

In Year 11, you are given an external assignment that will be 40 per cent of your final grade, with the remaining 60 per cent made up by coursework completed throughout the year.

How will I learn?

Using your technical, research, and creative skills you are required to develop your own work by being able to:

  • A01-Record observations, experiences, and ideas in forms that are appropriate to intentions.
  • A02-Analyse and evaluate images, objects, and artefacts showing understanding of context.
  • A03-Develop and explore ideas using media, processes, and resources, reviewing, modifying, and refining work as it progresses.
  • AO4-Present a personal response, realising intentions, and making informed connections with the work of others.

What abilities, aptitudes, skills and interests will I need?

  • Students should be able to use good technical skills in a range of materials.

Business

Qualification: BTEC Tech Award in Enterprise

What will I learn during the course?

Understanding business offers many opportunities for employment. The choice of units within this qualification reflects this, with units about entrepreneurship, marketing, and finance.

Component 1 — Exploring Enterprises

Learners will examine different enterprises to develop their knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of enterprises and the skills needed by entrepreneurs.

Component 2 — Planning for and running a business

Learners will select an enterprise idea to plan and pitch for. They will work as a small group and run a micro-enterprise activity.

Component 3 — Promotion and finance for enterprise

Learners will explore the different promotional methods used by enterprises and the factors that influence how enterprises identify and target their market.

How will I learn?

You will receive practical lessons as well as theory-based lessons. You will be taught using a wide variety of interesting teaching methods.

What abilities, aptitudes, skills, and interests will I need?

You should be able to use a computer confidently and be inspired to learn more about Business.

What opportunities can this course and qualification lead to?

This course could lead you to a successful career in various parts of industry.  It can also lead you onto studying Business at AS/A-levels to college or 6th Form.

Design and Technology

In Design and Technology at Washington Academy, we believe the unique contribution of the subject to the education of our young people, is to develop both their technological capability and technological perspective. We believe students at Washington Academy should use the skills of design, technological innovation, and design capability to solve problems of future generations. We teach students to design and create solutions to an ever-changing world and allow students to understand that everything that isn’t born or grown has been designed to solve an identified need or problem.

We achieve these aims and qualities in our young people through an effective combination of teaching methods and pedagogical theory that will include the following:

  • Designing and making
  • Delivery of our mission statement

The following schemes of work should be taught in relation to the new D&T programmes of study and are designed to give a broad and balanced D&T experience.  Through a variety of creative and practical activities, students should be taught the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. They should work in a range of domestic and local contexts [for example, the home, health, leisure, and culture], and industrial contexts [for example, engineering, manufacturing, construction, food, energy, agriculture (including horticulture), and fashion].  The scheme of work below is intended as a guide only. The teaching of the content can be adapted to suit the teacher, group, and resources available

Department Aims

The Design and Technology department follows the National Curriculum and aims to ensure all students:

  • Develop the creative, technical, and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding, and skills in order to design, and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evaluate, and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Subject Content

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, students should be taught the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. They should work in a range of domestic and local contexts [for example, the home, health, leisure, and culture], and industrial contexts [for example, engineering, manufacturing, construction, food, energy, agriculture (including horticulture), and fashion].

 When designing and making, students will be taught to:

Design

  • Use research and exploration, such as the study of different cultures, to identify and understand user needs
  • Identify and solve their own design problems and understand how to reformulate problems given to them
  • Develop specifications to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that respond to needs in a variety of situations
  • Use a variety of approaches [for example, biomimicry and user-centred design], to generate creative ideas and avoid stereotypical responses
  • Develop and communicate design ideas using annotated sketches, detailed plans, 3-D and mathematical modeling, oral and digital presentations, and computer-based tools

Make

  • Select from and use specialist tools, techniques, processes, equipment, and machinery precisely, including computer-aided manufacture
  • Select from and use a wider, more complex range of materials, components, and ingredients, taking into account their properties

Evaluate

  • Analyse the work of past and present professionals and others to develop and broaden their understanding
  • Investigate new and emerging technologies
  • Test, evaluate and refine their ideas and products against a specification, taking into account the views of intended users and other interested groups
  • Understand developments in design and technology, its impact on individuals, society, and the environment, and the responsibilities of designers, engineers, and technologists

Technological Knowledge

  • Use the properties of materials and the performance of structural elements to achieve functioning solutions
  • Understand how more advanced mechanical systems used in their products enable changes in movement and force
  • Understand how more advanced electrical and electronic systems can be powered and used in their products [for example, circuits with heat, light, sound, and movement as inputs and outputs]
  • Apply computing and use electronics to embed intelligence in products that respond to inputs [for example, sensors], and control outputs [for example, actuators], using programmable components [for example, microcontrollers].

Cooking and nutrition

As part of their work with food, students should be taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables students to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.

Students will be taught to:

  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health
  • Cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that they are able to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet
  • Become competent in a range of cooking techniques [for example, selecting and preparing ingredients; using utensils and electrical equipment; applying heat in different ways; using awareness of taste, texture, and smell to decide how to season dishes and combine ingredients; adapting and using their own recipes]
  • Understand the source, seasonality, and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients

Key Stage 3

The following modules are taught at Key Stage 3:

Year 7

In year 7, students work in a range of local and domestic contexts.  The curriculum in year 7 is designed to take an integrated approach to learning. Students will undertake a series of related activities in which they design, but do not always make, and often make without designing.

Design and Technology

In cooking and nutrition students will learn:

  • Hygiene and kitchen safety – the 4C’s
  • Eat well plate, dietary needs, and key nutrients
  • Selection and safe use of equipment
  • Demonstrate: Knife skills, grate, peel, slice, simmer, boil, rubbing in, shape, bake, and deal with some high-risk foods

Year 8

In year 8, students work in local and national domestic context of design and manufacturing products.  The curriculum in year 8 is designed to take an integrated approach to learning.  Students will undertake a series of related activities in which they design, but do not always make and often make without designing. This context applies to all modules

Design and Technology

  • Minimalist lighting — Design a light using a low powered USB circuit
  • Architectural design project — Eco-friendly starter homes
  • Pop-up book designs based on other designers work
  • Sustainable village project

Cooking and Nutrition

  • Food poisoning, key temperatures, conditions for bacteria
  • World foods, staple foods, healthy eating guidelines
  • Selection and safe use of equipment
  • Demonstrate: independence, refined knife skills, dealing with raw meat, sauce making, rubbing in raising agents.

Year 9

In year 9 students work in an industrial context of a wider scale to involve global issues. The curriculum in year 9 is designed to take an integrated approach to learning. Students will undertake a series of related activities in which they design, but do not always make and often make without designing. This context applies to all modules.

Design and Technology

  • Furniture design based upon Design movements
  • Art Deco and De Stijl
  • Embedding sustainable design- Kieba project
  • Festival project — Stage design and design and manufacture a range of products to purchase or distribute at the music festival
  • Design movement fashion design
  • Cinema project

Cooking and Nutrition

  • Principles of nutrition and health
  • Cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that they are able to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet

Key Stage 4

Design and Technology at Key Stage 4 is an option subject here at Washington Academy. At present the department offers the following three subject options at year 10 and 11:

  • Level 1/2 Hospitality and Catering
  • Level 1/2 Design the Built Environment

What will I learn?

  • How to design real solutions to design problems in a range of different materials and media.
  • How to understand and appreciate the design and manufacture of existing products.

  • How to combine your design and making skills with knowledge and understanding.
  • The opportunity to apply skills, knowledge, and understanding from other subjects, where appropriate.
  • How to develop your graphical capability through activities that involve a range of themes, materials, and processes.
  • Opportunities to develop practical abilities and the confidence to design, make and modify products and systems for different purposes and selecting and using materials effectively.
  • How to develop ICT skills to use CAD/CAM during designing and making.

 

 How will I learn?

You will learn how to design in an industrial context by developing skills that are required to design and make, through task-based projects using a combination of materials as well as theoretical components.

 

Essential Information on the course:

  • Unit 1: Written Paper -2 hours -50% of the total marks.
  • Unit 2: Controlled Assessment – A Design and make portfolio based around solving a design problem — 50 per cent of the total marks

 

 What abilities, aptitudes, skills and interests will I need?

To succeed you will be expected to:

  • Have an interest in finding out how things are designed and manufactured.
  • Enjoy designing products, modelling prototypes, and manufacturing in materials.
  • Enjoy using CAD/ CAM or ICT-based software programmes used to develop products.
  • Have an interest in designers and their influence on society.

This course offers you the opportunity to develop all of these skills as well as evaluating products currently available to the consumer.

To continue in further education such as A Level and Degree level Design level

Take an apprenticeship or career in one of the many design sectors such as: Advertising, Architecture, Automotive Design, Graphic Design and Illustration, Engineering, Fashion Designer, Furniture and related products, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Research, and Software Engineer

 

Hospitality and Catering

Examination board: Eduqas

Qualification: Level 1/2

Qualification: GCSE

 What will I Learn?

  • How chefs produce food for functions.
  • How to cater to different customer needs.
  • How to make healthy balanced meals.
  • How to cost and shop for ingredients.
  • How to produce restaurant-quality food.
  • You will learn about the catering environment and the role of individual staff.
  • You will also be taught health and safety and food hygiene.

 

 Essential information on the course.

Unit 1 — Catering skills related to food preparation & service. This consists of one externally set practical with supporting theory work WJEC tasks — 48 hours in total and contributing to 50 per cent of the final grade.

 

Unit 2 — Catering, hygiene, safety, and legislation. This is a written examination for 90 minutes that contains short answers, structured, and free-response questions on the catering and hospitality content. This unit will make up 50 per cent of the final grade.

 

How will I learn?

You will learn by researching, planning, and carrying out practical tasks. You will practice high-level cooking skills and understanding the theory behind the cooking methods.

 

 What abilities, aptitudes, skills and interests will I need?

To succeed you will be expected to:

  • Enjoy a challenge, and we prepared to work on your own initiative.
  • Show flair for high volume fast-paced catering.
  • Planning and organisational skills.
  • Provide your own ingredients for many different practical tasks.
  • Work independently and sensibly. Be prepared to work independently and show initiative
  • Enjoy the subject, and be creative.
  • Have a keen interest in food and service.

 

 What opportunities can this course and qualification lead to?

  • Continue in full-time education e.g. Catering / Hospitality Diploma.
  • Train as a chef/ apprenticeship course.
  • Work in the catering or hospitality industry.
  • Excellent practical skills.

 

Designing the Built Environment

Examination board: Eduqas

Qualification: Level 1/2 Technical award (equivalent to one GCSE)

Assessment: Examination — 40 per cent / NEA — 60 per cent

 

What will I learn?

The construction industry employs about 10 per cent of the UK workforce and creates the buildings in which we work, live, study, and enjoy our leisure time. It also creates the roads, railways, airports, and seaports we use to help us travel to those buildings. If someone wants to add an extension to their home, add new office buildings on their land or turn a field into a sports centre, they need to:

  • Make sure they meet planning requirements
  • Use materials and structures that deliver a safe and efficient building
  • Provide access by road, rail, or water
  • Ensure it can be built within budget

 

Increasingly, society wants construction to be:

  • Sustainable through using materials that are sourced sustainably and sustainable energy sources.
  • Design-conscious; providing buildings that are pleasant to look at and use.

These needs and wants are met through the design of the construction project. You will learn the skills and knowledge required to deliver these needs.

 

How will I learn?

A Level 1/2 Award in Designing the Built Environment is designed to mainly support learners in schools and colleges who want to learn about the construction industry from the design, construction, and planning perspective. It provides learners with a broad introduction to the design sector of the construction industry and the types of career opportunities available. It is mainly suitable as a foundation for further study. This further study could provide learners with the awareness of the work of different types of job roles in the sector such as architects, construction managers, design engineers, surveyors, and planning officers. As a result, they may wish to start an apprenticeship or continue with their studies into higher education in order to pursue those job roles.

 

Essential Information on the course: (Current Assessment)

The qualification is taught through the following units:

  • Planning potential of construction projects (40 per cent Examination)
  • Drawing construction plans (30 per cent Non-Examination content)
  • Building structures and materials (30 per cent Non-Examination content)

 

 What abilities, aptitudes, skills, and interests will I need?

This structure has been designed to allow learners to develop the understanding and skills related to a range of functional roles in the construction design sector. The units provide an overview of roles such as planning officers, design engineers, and architect technicians and how these roles work together to produce construction designs that are fit for purpose.

 

You will need the following skills required for independent learning and development:

  • A range of generic and transferable skills
  • The ability to solve problems
  • The skills of project-based research, development, and presentation
  • The fundamental ability to work alongside other professionals in a professional environment.

 

 What opportunities can this course and qualification lead to?

The successful completion of this qualification, together with other equivalent qualifications, such as maths and sciences, could provide the learner with opportunities to access a range of qualifications including GCE, apprenticeships, vocationally related, and occupational qualifications. These include:

  • GCEs in Physics or Environmental Studies
  • Diplomas in Sustainable Construction and Built Environment Design
  • Apprenticeships in the various Design, Surveying, and Civil Engineering careers of construction

English Language

Key Stage 3

What will I learn in Years 7 and 8?

You will work towards a GCSE qualification in English Language and English Literature.  These GCSE qualifications offer the opportunity to explore texts from a personal perspective and offers an experience of a range of text types and their context.  You will develop your ability to read critically, comparing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. You will also develop your ability to write for different purposes and audiences, adapting your vocabulary and style accordingly.

How will I learn?

The course is classroom-based, but you will be given the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge through other media such as the use of the Internet, to conduct your own research on many of the elements studied.

You will get plenty of opportunities to discuss your responses to the subject as well as completion of speaking and listening components.

What abilities, aptitudes, skills and interests will I need?

All students have a variety of interests and there is scope within the Language course for you to write and share these interests with others. You need to have the ability to be able to work on your own as well as part of a group in, for example, speaking and listening exercises. You will also have the chance to develop your ICT skills further.

What opportunities can this course and qualification lead to?

The development of language skills is a fundamental part of the education process for all individuals. Elements studied in this course will have an impact on all subjects which in turn opens the door to all sorts of opportunities. English Language GCSE is now an essential requirement for movement into further education and training.

Key Stage 4

What will I learn in Years 9, 10, and 11?

English Literature

Key Stage 3

What will I learn in Years 7 and 8?

You will work towards a GCSE qualification in English Literature.  This GCSE offers the opportunity to explore texts from a personal perspective and offers an experience of Literature today and the English Literary Heritage. Texts studied include Shakespeare plays, poetry, novels, and a range of literary fiction extracts.

How will I learn?

The course is classroom-based, but you will be given the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge through other media such as the use of the Internet, to conduct your own research on many of the elements studied.

You will get plenty of opportunities to discuss your responses to the subject in preparation for your examination units.

What abilities, aptitudes, skills and interests will I need?

All students have a variety of interests and there is scope within the Literature course for you to write and share these interests with others. You need to have the ability to be able to work on your own as well as part of a group. You will also have the chance to develop your ICT skills further.

What opportunities can this course and qualification lead to?

The development of the skills of critically analysing texts complement the skills you develop when studying for English Language.  Elements studied in this course will have an impact on all subjects which in turn opens the door to all sorts of opportunities.

Key Stage 4

What will I learn in Years 9, 10, and 11?

You will work towards a GCSE qualification in English Literature. This GCSE offers the opportunity to explore texts from a personal perspective and offers an experience of a range of text types and their context.  You will develop your ability to read critically.  Students study four modules, all externally assessed by two final exams.  The first exam tests their ability to respond to a Drama and Prose text. The second exam tests their ability to respond to Poetry and Unseen texts.

How will I learn?

The course is classroom-based, but you will be given the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge through other media such as the use of the Internet, to conduct your own research on many of the elements studied.

You will get plenty of opportunities to discuss your responses to the subject.

What abilities, aptitudes, skills and interests will I need?

All students have a variety of interests and there is scope within the Literature course for you to write and share these interests with others. What will I learn in Year 7, 8, & 9?

Students will develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places — both terrestrial and marine — including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes.

Within KS4 you will work towards a GCSE in Geography, following the AQA A 8035 specification. Enquiry based learning will be at the forefront of the approach to learning topics including:

Crime and punishment in Britain, c1000–present and Whitechapel, c1870–c1900: crime, policing and the inner city.

This comprises a thematic study of crime and punishment in Britain c1000-present. The thematic studies require students to understand change and continuity across a long sweep of history, including the most significant characteristics of different ages from the medieval to modern periods. They include people, events, and developments and reveal wider changes in aspects of society over the centuries and allow comparisons to be made between different periods of history.

It also includes a study of a historic environment which is Whitechapel, c1870–c1900: crime, policing, and the inner city. Each historic environment is linked to a thematic study and focuses on that site in its historical context. It examines the relationship between a place and historical events and developments.

For this paper, learners will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the periods studied. As well as analyse, evaluate and use sources (contemporary to the period) to make substantiated judgments, in the context of historical events studied.

Paper 2: Period study and British depth study

British Depth Study: Early Elizabethan England, 1558–88.

The depth studies focus on a substantial and coherent short time span and require students to understand the complexity of a society or historical situation and the interplay of different aspects within it. Depending on the depth of study chosen, these may include social, economic, political, religious, and military aspects.

Period Study: The American West, c1835–c1895

The period studies focus on a substantial and coherent medium time span of at least 50 years and require students to understand the unfolding narrative of substantial developments and issues associated with the period.

For this paper, learners will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the periods studied. Explain and analyse historical events and periods studied using second-order historical concepts which are causation, consequence, similarity, difference, change, continuity, and significance.

Paper 3: Modern depth study

Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918–39

The depth studies focus on a substantial and coherent short time span and require students to understand the complexity of a society or historical situation and the interplay of different aspects within it. Depending on the depth of study chosen, these may include social, economic, political, cultural, and military aspects.

For this paper, learners will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the periods studied. Be able to explain and analyse historical events and periods studied using second-order historical concepts which are causation, consequence, similarity, difference, change, continuity, and significance. As well as analyse, evaluate and use sources (contemporary to the period) to make substantiated judgments, in the context of historical events studied. Along with being able to analyse, evaluate and make substantiated judgments about interpretations (including how and why interpretations may differ) in the context of historical events studied.

How will I learn?

There will be peer assessment and teaching as well as self-assessment. Independence is a key component of GCSE studies and is encouraged. Computing

This exciting GCSE gives you an excellent opportunity to investigate how computers work and how they’re used while also developing computer programming and problem-solving skills. You will do some in-depth practical work and complete a project using the Python programming language.

How will I learn?

This two-unit course is designed to give you an in-depth understanding of how computer technology works and a look at what goes on behind the screen. You will learn using a flip learning method where homework is a critical part of the preparation for the lesson ahead rather than reflective of the lesson which has just been completed.

You must enjoy programming and be able to use a wide variety of programming packages including Python and Scratch. You must also have a good understanding of Mathematics and Science and be keen to know how and why things work. Media

The BTEC Tech Award in Creative Media Production is a Level 2 qualification that allows students to explore different audiences and types of media.

How will I learn?

You will have three components over the length of the course.

Component 1 is a controlled assessment that has students exploring media to understand their purpose, genre, audience, and engagement.

Component 2 is a controlled assessment that focuses on the development of practical media production skills and techniques.

Component 3 is an examined piece of work where students will create their own media product in response to a given client brief.

Maths

Key Stage 3 students are given the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills, and understanding of mathematics taking into account prior knowledge from Key Stage 2, following the Renewed Framework. This gives them a firm foundation to then move on to Key Stage 4. The scheme of learning develops all the mathematical, personal learning, and thinking skills needed as well as assessing students’ performance.

All students start their GCSE mathematics course at the beginning of Year 10. During this course, the majority of students study at foundation level with the intention of the more able students moving on to higher level in Year 11.

All Key Stage 4 students follow the Edexcel GCSE mathematics scheme of learning at either foundation or higher level.

The qualification of mathematics encourages students to develop confidence in, and have a positive attitude towards mathematics and to help them recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and society.  The students are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills, and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts including number, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics, and probability.

What will I learn in Year 7, 8, and 9?

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all students:

It is essential that everyone can demonstrate competence in mathematics both for continuing in education or for going into employment.  If you have studied this subject at Higher level you will be able to access grades 9-5 and at Foundation level 5-1. If you have studied GCSE at Higher level and obtain a 9-6 then you can progress onto A-level mathematics. Employers generally require that you are competent at maths and this means that you possess a 9-4 grade at GCSE.

Modern Foreign Languages

The Modern Foreign Languages Department has two members of staff. Mrs Renshaw is a long-standing member of the Modern Foreign Languages Department and teaches French and Spanish. Mrs El Khandari, Head of Department teaches French and Spanish. Mr Herbane is acting Head of Department, he is a native Spanish speaker with a lot of experience.

Students are put into classes according to their ability in KS3. Students will study either French or Spanish in KS3. Students are taught a broad range of topics and grammar via a variety of teaching and learning styles.

At Key Stage 4 students may choose to study the language previously studied to GCSE levels. Language results have been very good over the last few years and continue to improve.

What will I learn in Year 7 and 8

At Key Stage 3 music is taught to all students. This course covers a variety of aspects of music including performing, composing, and listening tasks. Starting with the fundamentals, the focus in year 7 is on ‘practical music making’ with much solo and ensemble performance work. A focus on practical skills using tuned and untuned percussion, strings, and keyboards in years 7,8, and 9 ensures all students will reach a deep and meaningful understanding of how different combinations of instruments can work together. The course progresses throughout the three years looking at various styles, genres, and musical traditions from around the world.

How will I be taught?

Lessons are a mix of theory and practical activities. Students are given time to develop their own creativity and use their imagination through listening, performing, and composing music. The music room is well-equipped and has 3 practice rooms to allow for personal practice of instruments and singing activities.

Key Stage 4

What will I learn in Years 9, 10, and 11?

We offer Eduqas GCSE Music. The course demands instrumental skills and the ability to perform both individually and as a member of an ensemble. The course also covers composition and listening, looking at the following Areas of Study: Musical Forms and Devices, Music for Ensemble, Film Music, and Popular Music.  Students are also entered for external ABRSM graded practical examinations if they choose to do so.

How will I learn?

Physical Education and Dance

Key Stage 3 and 4

What will I learn in Year 7 to 11 in Core practical PE?

Throughout both Key stages, we aim to give all students a broad and balanced physical education curriculum that covers a wide range of activities and skills. Both team and individual sports are a key feature, as is creative support including gymnastics and trampolining.

With the use of our Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) the PE Department focuses on tennis, netball, and football regardless of weather conditions. We also offer rugby league which is provided by coaching from Newcastle Thunder.

The dance studio is a fantastic learning environment for gymnastics, dance, creative arts, and fitness lessons. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness suite that is used in lessons to develop student’s knowledge of health and fitness and the body in action.

In our sports hall, we offer activities such as badminton, basketball, Table Tennis, and handball.

What will I learn in Year 11?

In this qualification, students will use hairdressing and beauty therapy and related industries (i.e. retail, leisure, fashion, marketing, media, business) to develop themselves and, in particular, the skills and attributes prized by employers, further education colleges, and higher education institutions.

This qualification consists of four units

  • Understanding the hair and beauty sector (mandatory)
  • Hair and beauty research project (mandatory)
  • Hair and beauty science
  • Responding to a hair and beauty design brief

Students will have the opportunity to identify adverse skin and scalp conditions, choose the correct products for a variety of hair types, shampoo and condition to a salon standard, as well as blow-dry and apply colour using the correct method.

How will I learn?

You will learn how to use and apply knowledge, skills, and understanding in practical tasks and in real-life problems. You will learn through demonstration, practice, questioning, and discussion.

What abilities, aptitudes, skills and interests will I need?

You should have a genuine interest in hairdressing and styling.
