UPDATE: Industrial Action by NASUWT

NASUWT Industrial Action — 3rd, 4th & 5th July 2018

While we had been informed of the dates of the proposed strike action we were also working closely with the NASUWT to respond to their concerns and had hoped we might achieve this before the first strike day took place.

Unfortunately that has been very difficult due to a lack of detail on the specifics of the issues being provided to the Senior Leadership Team, and we have been unable to reach a formal agreement on any actions.

We continue to pursue this as we want to reach positive solutions which can only benefit staff and students and we would hope this might enable the NASUWT to reduce their action appropriately.

While we are obviously saddened that union representatives feel the need to continue with industrial action, we have to respect the fact that it is the democratic right of the unions and their members to strike. Our strong desire, however, is for us to be able to continue to have dialogue with the unions that will ensure our students’ education is not adversely impacted by their actions.

We have already had a number of meetings to attempt to resolve the issues and we have offered a range of supportive actions. These are continuing, with the next round of meetings planned for Monday 2nd July 2018. In anticipation of the industrial action going ahead next week, Washington Academy will be open on each day of the action, albeit with the following restrictions:

Tuesday 3rd July

Year 7: All students will be in from 8.30am until 1.25pm (End of Year Examinations)

Year 9: All students will be in from 1.25 — 3.05pm

Wednesday 4th July

Year 7: All students will be in from 8.30am until 1.25pm (End of Year Examinations)

Year 10: All students will be in from 1.25 — 3.05pm. Students taking in the pre-arranged Careers Visit will need to be on site for 8.30am.

Thursday 5th July

Year 7: All students will be in from 8.30am until 1.25pm (End of Year Examinations)

Year 8: All students will be in from 1.25pm until 3.05pm. Those students attending the YMCA will receive confirmation of the time to attend prior to Thursday.

Washington Academy will be open to all students on Monday 2nd July and Friday 6th July.

These arrangements may be subject to change as a result of discussion with NASUWT.

I would like to thank you all for your support and for the many positive conversations that I have had so far with parents and carers.

Warm regards

Mike Beverley
